不定詞 [Infinitives]に関する発展知識メモ
/ whether to do (or not)「～すべきかどうか」
whetherは★接続詞。
ifにも「～かどうか」の意味があるが、★<if + to do>の形はない。I can't decide if[whether] I should buy a new dictionary. p.130
/ not to do(★名詞的用法の不定詞)
I've decided not to apply to the college.
I've decided to not apply to the college.と、notを toの後ろに置くこともあるが、作文では避ける方がよい。
take care/ be careful + not to do「～しないように注意する」
Take care not to catch a cold. かぜをひかないように気をつけなさい。p.130
/ 「～しないために」(目的を表す副詞的用法の否定)の意味は、★<not to do>以外の形で表す。
Keep the money in the safe so (that) it won't be stolen. <not to be stolen>は使わない。
In order not to get a failing grade again, you have to study harder. <Not to fail>は使わない。p.131
/ enough + 名詞(X) + to do「～できるくらい十分なX」
I don't have enough money to buy a desktop computer.
I don't have money enough to buy a desktop computer.でも正しい。ただ、名詞と組み合わせのときは、形容詞・副詞とは異なり、★enoughを名詞の前に置くことが多い(この場合の enoughは形容詞。これに対して、形容詞・副詞の後にくる場合は副詞。)。p.132
